After more than twelve years of waiting, “Kaamelott: The First Chapter” is finally out. The movie takes us back to the iconic Arthurian myth, as imagined by Alexandre Astier. In this epic story, we reunite with Arthur, the former king and saga’s protagonist. Beware of spoilers!

Arthur: a unique King

Arthur, played by Alexandre Astier, is the focusing point of the movie. However, he fell into a deep depression at the end of the series. Having lost all motivation, he’s no longer the King he was. Despite his issues, and as prophesized at the end of Book V, Arthur becomes a hero again. Supported by his kin, the ex-king of Britain tries to go back to being an example.

Like Father and Son: Arthur and Percival

Arthur’s family and friends are his rock. Among them, the knight Percival, an iconic figure of “Kaamelott”. Along with Karadoc, Perceval founded his clan. They will play a crucial role in Arthur’s return as a King. Portrayed by Frank Pitiot, Perceval brings the comedy he’s famous for. His legendary loyalty is still as touching as ever, even twelve years later. Perceval still considers Arthur as a role-model and tries to follow his footsteps.

Movie Analysis

Deserving of its popularity, Kaamelott’s adaptation to the cinema is a success. The movie stays loyal to the series atmosphere, while adapting itself to a new format. “Kaamelott: The First Chapter” is a product of the series evolution from Book IV to Book V. Referencing deep subjects like depression and suicide, Arthur’s saga evolved with its public. The movie is funny, emotional, and epic. Arthur is a realistic character, with his strengths but also weaknesses.

“Kaamelott: The First Chapter”’ main strength is its characters. The relationship between Arthur and Guenièvre, once chaotic and tumultuous, is now worthy of the legend. Merlin gets back his dignity, which is something a lot of fans expected. Even the new ones manage to rise to the occasion and match the public’s favorites. Arthur stays true to himself, as sarcastic and secretly caring as ever. Unlike Lancelot, he truly is a hero.

To conclude

“Kaamelott: The First Chapter” is the right sequel to the “Kaamelott” series. Alexandre Astier is once again showing us his creative genius, and talent for choosing his actors. Arthur, Perceval, Merlin and the others take us back to the Holy Grail quest. This quest is still ongoing, with the sequel of this movie scheduled for release in 2024.
