Even though “Kaamelott” started as a comedy, it evolved. We can feel this in the movies’ themes, but also in its music. Among the compositions in the soundtrack, we find “Une Autre Attaque Burgonde”. This song and the others were composed by Alexandre Astier. Music marks the key points in the movie, and this one fits its scene perfectly.
Music always plays a crucial part in “Kaamelott: The First Chapter”. Each of the songs are linked to a scene. “Une Autre Attaque Burgonde” does not break this rule. The original soundtrack is designed to the action. This music is a prime example of this.
Burgondes are proud, strong, and awfully bad at strategy. Their attacks against Kaamelott systematically fail. The first time we see them, their own weapons turn against them. This event traces back from when Arthur was king, and hasn’t changed under Lancelot’s reign. King Arthur soon realizes the Burgondes are music prodigies. This is a nod to Alexandre Astier’s passion for music. Arthur, thanks to his military training, will use this.
“Une Autre Attaque Burgonde” is linked to the Burgondes’ second attack. Lead by Arthur, this assault on Kaamelott will turn out to be successful. Music plays a dual role in it. It’s as important to the viewer as to the scenario. Music is used to coordinate the troops. King Burgonde, followed by Lady Séli and Léodagan, lead the siege on Kaamelott.
This military maneuver allows Arthur to go into the castle unnoticed. Left with no defenders by Lancelot, Kaamelott falls without fighting. We have here an application of Sun Tzu’s principles. Victory without losses or true fight is also Arthur’s trademark. He, after all, is a pacifist.
Musically speaking, “Une Autre Attaque Burgonde” fits its role perfectly. We start on a slow rhythm. The song is marked by short tuba notes. The Burgondes are unorganized, Lancelot mocks their lack of cohesion. Then, we have a short break. The brass ensemble starts again at a faster pace. Arthur gives his allies the signal. The Burgonde King, Lady Séli and Léodagan lead the troops. The song “Une Attaque Burgonde” represents chaos before harmony and order.
“Kaamelott: The First Chapter’s” soundtrack supports the scenario. It’s an essential element for every part of the movie. Each of the tracks are meant to serve the movie. Alexandre Astier affirms his difference one more time. He directed, played in, and composed the movie. It’s what gives his work his own identity. Arthur is an epic legend, it had to have its epic soundtrack.
